FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT DLIELC

1. Who can attend DLI?

DLIELC is a support agency of the United States Department of Defense which designates the students we train in preparation for further military or government training. All of our students must be sponsored by an agency of the United States Department of Defense

2. Who can buy DLI materials?

The ALC materials are for sale to anyone anywhere. (The only restrictions are on tests and quizzes; they can be sold only to institutions, not to individuals).

3. Are the materials suitable for nonmilitary instruction?

The materials are very suitable in nonmilitary environments. Some of our best customers are colleges, universities, and other public & private schools. The Clark County School District in Las Vegas, NV is one of our larger customers.

4. Can you buy single copies?

We do have a minimum order amount of 10 each on student texts. Anything else listed in the catalog may be purchased in the quantity desired.

5. Does DLIELC have demo copies of its materials for review?

We have Sampler Kit I & II available. Kit I consists of one copy of Books 6, 12, & 18, with one cassette lesson tape for each of the three books. Kit II consists of one copy of Books 6, 12, 18, & 24, and one lesson tape for each book. We also offer Starter Packages in each level. These consist of enough copies of all the materials for a class of ten students and one instructor, for each book in each level, including support materials.

6. How do I order the material?

Customers may order by using the order form provided in the current catalog. We also accept orders by phone or fax. A four percent administrative fee is required from all non-federal purchasers, plus shipping charges. Visa , Mastercard or the government IMPAC cards may be used for payment. Of course we also accept company/certified check or money order negotiable in US currency. Checks should be made payable to: Defense Language Institute English Language Center. No personal checks or cash accepted.

7. How long is the training at your school?

There are fifteen different courses offered at DLIELC. The English instructor courses vary from 8 weeks to 27 weeks. The other courses are from 9 weeks to 52 weeks or longer. They are intended for students who need to improve their proficiency in order to attain minimum standards for the next training site.

8. How is the length of training determined?

The student's proficiency determines the length of training.

9. Who can live on campus?

Students and their authorized spouse can live on campus; however, billeting cost is slightly higher. Children are not permitted in the living quarters.

10. Can I bring my family?

Yes, if the Invitational Travel Order (ITO) or NATO order authorizes dependents.

11. Can I live on-base with my family?

No students are authorized to live in base housing with their families. However, there are several apartments and hotels located near Lackland AFB where you may rent or lease. The average cost of an apartment is about $1000 per month; for hotels it's about $75 per day.

12. Who determines the financial responsibility for my family's medical services?

Medical care and financial responsibility is described in the SAO Handbook, in the Student Handbook section, on page six.

13. What extracurricular activities are available for students?
