The Bureau for International Language Co-ordination (BILC)

PURPOSE: The Bureau for International Language Co-ordination (BILC) was established within the NATO Training Group/Joint Services Subgroup. BILC is a consultative and advisory body for language training matters in NATO, BILC has the following responsibilities:

  1. The dissemination to participating countries of information on developments in the field of language training.
  2. The convening of an annual conference of participating nations which review the work done in the co-ordination field and in the study of particular language topics.

MEMBERSHIP: The founding members are France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Subsequently, the following countries joined:

1967: Belgium, Canada, Netherlands
1975: SHAPE and IMS/NATO (non-voting members)
1978: Portugal
1983: Turkey
1984: Denmark and Greece
1985: Spain
1993: Norway
1999: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland

SECRETARIAT: Since BILC's inception the responsibility for the secretariat was held by the United Kingdom, Germany and is currently being held by the United States.
